The Provision almanac

A year of comfort in the Molalla foothills.

Heating and cooling here follow the calendar: months of steady, damp heat, a spring tune-up window, summers of heat waves and smoke, and a fall check before the rain. Here’s what each season asks of a system.

Spring Mar–May

Tune-up season for cooling

Between the last frost and the first 90-degree day is the time to service the cooling side: clean coils, check the charge and the drain, and change filters before pollen season peaks.

  • Spring maintenance
  • AC and heat pump checks
  • Filtration upgrades

Summer Jun–Sep

Dry heat and smoke-season air

Summers are dry and mostly mild, but heat waves now push into the 100s, and wildfire smoke can settle into the valley for days. Cooling and filtration both matter.

  • AC and heat pump repair
  • New cooling installs
  • Air filtration

Fall Oct–NovNow

Ready before the rain sets in

The fall check on the heating side: ignition, safeties, airflow, heat strips and thermostat setup, so the first cold, wet week isn’t the test.

  • Fall maintenance
  • Furnace and heat pump checks
  • Thermostat setup

Winter Dec–Feb

Steady heat through the wet months

Long, damp stretches in the 30s and 40s, with the occasional ice storm or east-wind cold snap. Furnaces and heat pumps run for months at a time; this is when no-heat and AUX-heat calls come in.

  • No-heat diagnostics
  • Heat pump defrost and AUX heat
  • Furnace repair

Why “Provision”

A name carried forward from family.

Provision Heating and Cooling got the name “Provision” from a long standing family business tradition, acknowledging God’s provision in every aspect of our lives.

From Provision’s own business listing

For a heating and cooling company, the word fits the work as well: making sure a home is provided for, in the cold, wet months and the hot, smoky ones alike.

Provision jobs

Work you see, and work under the floor.

Photos from Provision’s own jobs: outdoor units set level on their pads, insulated duct strapped up in a crawl space, and return grilles sized to let a system breathe.

Local knowledge

Built for foothill weather.

Molalla sits where the Willamette Valley meets the Cascade foothills. Winters are long, wet and mostly mild, with the odd ice storm or east-wind cold snap. Summers are dry, and since the 2021 heat dome nobody here assumes they’ll stay mild.

Add homes in town with ducts retrofitted under the floor, newer houses on heat pumps, and rural acreage with no gas line at all, and good HVAC work starts with an honest look at the actual house.

  • Heat pumps that do both jobsHeating for the long wet season and cooling for heat waves, with backup heat set up right.
  • Crawl-space ductworkWhere torn and disconnected runs quietly waste heated air.
  • Filtration for smoke seasonCleaner air when wildfire smoke settles into the valley.
  • Town and countryCity homes, acreage, shops and homes off the gas line.

Straight answers

HVAC questions, answered.

Should I repair or replace my furnace, heat pump or air conditioner?

Repair it if the system is reasonably young, has been reliable, and the repair is a modest share of what a new system would cost. Consider replacement when it’s older, needs a major part like a compressor or heat exchanger, uses R-22, or keeps needing repairs.

Do heat pumps work well in Molalla and the Willamette Valley?

Yes. The valley’s mild, wet winters are well suited to heat pumps, which is why they’re so common here. On the coldest days they lean on backup heat, usually electric heat strips or a furnace in a dual-fuel setup.

Do I really need air conditioning in western Oregon?

More homes do now than a generation ago. The June 2021 heat dome pushed Portland to 116°F and Salem to 117°F, and multi-day heat waves have become a regular summer risk.

How often should I schedule HVAC maintenance?

Provision recommends maintenance twice a year, ideally in spring and fall: the cooling side before summer and the heating side before the cold, wet months.

Why are some rooms always too hot or too cold?

Usually ductwork: a long or undersized run, a disconnected or crushed duct, or no return path from that room. Sun exposure and insulation play a part too.
